How to Make Your Own Natural Shampoo

Do you suffer from a dry or irritated scalp? The multiple chemical additives in your shampoo may be to blame. Even shampoos that are marketed as "gentle" and "organic" often contain compounds such as sodium laureth sulfate (a foaming chemical detergent), which is a dry scalp culprit. By making your shampoo from simple ingredients, you can worry and suffer a lot less while also doing the environment a favor.

Start by mixing the following ingredients in a large bowl:

1 cup of coconut milk

¾ cup of pure aloe vera gel

1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar

5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil (see our recommendations below)

You can use whichever essential oil suits your fancy. The Spa at Yellow Creek carries several that aids in dry skin hydration and provides a beautiful scent to your homemade shampoo:

DECLEOR AROMESSENCE NÉROLI HYDRATING OIL-SERUM -A 100% pure botanical blend of Neroli, Sandalwood, Petitgrain, Sage, Parsley and Juniper Berry, this oil is designed to comfort the skin and has an uplifting, fresh floral, delicate scent. DECLEOR AROMESSENCE ROSE D’ORIENT-An elixir of 100% pure and natural Essential Oils specially formulated for the daily care of sensitive, reactive skin. Because of its natural affinity with the skin, it penetrates skin upon application for soothing, healthy results and offers immediate softness and reduces irritation. This serum of Damask Rose, Roman Camomile, Neroli and Petitgrain Essential Oils, with a fine and silky texture, is specially formulated for sensitive skin.

DECLEOR AROMESSENCE MARJOLAINE NOURISHING OIL SERUM-This high-performance serum with a refreshing and fruity scent delivers intense and instant nourishing comfort to dry and very dry skin.  It includes moisturizing essential oils of Myrrh, Lavender, and Marjoram, which is rich in Gamma-terpinene to stimulate lipid synthesis, strengthen the skin’s barrier and ensure optimal hydration. Cranberry and Argan Oils help strengthen and protect the skin and enrich it with essential nutrients, while Babassu and Avocado Oils regenerate the hydrolipid film to improve the skin’s quality, resulting in deeply nourished skin.

Whisk these ingredients together until the mixture looks smooth and uniform, and then use a funnel to pour your natural shampoo into a bottle for storage. Since this shampoo contains only natural, perishable ingredients, you'll need to keep it in the fridge between uses.

Keep in mind that this homemade shampoo won't foam like store-bought shampoo (the foaming aspect of shampoo is made by chemicals and detergents which are drying agents) but will still get your hair squeaky clean. The coconut milk nourishes your locks, so you don't have to use a conditioner. Use about two tablespoons of shampoo per wash, and store the leftovers in the refrigerator for up to a month. Share this shampoo recipe with all of your friends. Its simple formula is better for your hair, your body, and nature. ENJOY!
