Calories consumed partaking in summer festivities can add up fast. The margarita, a warm weather staple, goes down easy, but with a hefty calorie price tag that follows.  One 8-ounce margarita on the rocks can have over 500 calories. A frozen margarita has nearly 800 calories (the equivalent of 16 chocolate chip cookies). It’s easy to make your drinks skinnier and healthier at the same time. Below are some simple tricks to shave off calories as well as some simple guilt-free recipes for your summertime fun.

Simple swaps to lighten up your cocktails:

  • Cut calories in half (and add nutrients) by using coconut water instead of fruit juice.
  • Use watermelon puree to sweeten drinks naturally.
  • Replace sweetened fruit purees, and frozen drink mixes with fresh or frozen sliced strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries.
  • Replace half the amount of fruit juice with flavored sparkling water.
  • Opt for sake, shochu or soju, Asian spirits with fewer calories than vodka and gin.
  • Replace tonic water with club soda or seltzer water.
